Paper lantern is made of thin, bright colored paper. It comes in various shapes and sizes. They are simply look like a paper bag with a candle placed inside it. People often hang paper lanterns outside of their business or home to grab the attention in festivals. There are other traditional Chinese lanterns, mainly red and in others colors too. These red color paper lanterns traditionally symbolize good fortune and joy.
Take a piece of paper in the colour of your choice. You can choose the colours that identifies the holiday, such as orange for Halloween or green for Christmas. Cut the paper in 6/9 inches (15.2 by 22.9 cm) in size within the reason.
Now fold the paper in half-length wise. Mark with straight edge for an angled, oriental feel. Fold the top and open the edges down by ½ inch (1.3 cm).
Unfold the edges. Glue a ½ inch (1.3 cm) strip of decorative paper to design your edges.
Cut the slits from the middle to the edges with scissors. Hold the paper as the folded edge is facing downward. Space your slits approx. ¾ inch (1.9 cm) apart. Joint it with the first slit when you wrap it around.
Unfold your paper now. Curve paper around, so that a cylindrical shape with a centrefold will stick out in the middle. Overlap the ends of lantern. Staple the top and bottom rims.
For lantern handle cut a ¾ inch (1.9 cm) by 6 inch (15.2 cm) strip of paper. Staple it with two points inside the top rim.
Add Ornamentation. You can glitter stickers, snowflakes, stars or any other decoration to your paper lantern to make it more attractive.
Make a series of handmade hanging lanterns and create a lantern garland by string them up.
Lightweight paper works well for this and it allows most light to shine through. If you are looking for a budget friendly lantern craft, brown paper lunch bags will be your best bet.
Cut the paper in 5-6 inches (12.7-15.2 cm) high and 9-10 inches (22.9-25.4 cm) long. 9 inch (22.9 cm) length is preferable. Cut another strip of paper in 1 inch (2.5 cm) tall and 10 inch (25.4 cm) wide. This will be lantern base.
Decorate your lantern by colors. If your paper is strong enough, you can cut pretty design holes to emit even more light.
Place a piece of double stick tape behind whole edge vertically and 1/10 inches (2.5/25.4 cm) in strip. You should avoid the glue for thinner paper. Now wrap the lantern around to form a cylinder. Align the opposite edge with the tape and stick it together. Now keep your paper lantern around glass holder and it will light up through the top.
High wattage paper lanterns are generally used in lights intended for movie production. They provide soft, edgeless light to a scene.
